It's the end of June now. Following the dusting of snow in the last days of May, we've had fantastic weather all month. The burn outside the house has dried up, and we're starting to miss the rain! We had our first swift in the glen on the 25th - a late arrival across the UK, swifts for some reason rarely venture up the glen, even when they can be seen circling above Loch Sunart only a mile away. We also watched two beautiful redstarts along at Kilmalieu. Round here, I've only ever seen them along the western shores of Loch Linnhe. Great tits have raised a family in our roof, which is lovely until mum or dad appear at first light to feed their brood. As the nest is immediately above our bedroom...well, you get the picture. There are also young goldfinch on the feeders, bullying their parents into feeding them. A lone cuckoo is still hanging around in the glen. On checking the last few years, they're normally gone by early June.
This file is the up to date list for the year so far, with both birds and animals. Follow
this link for a full list for 2009. We had two unusual additions to the list - a rook was minding its own business in the trees outside the village shop, and a lone pheasant chuck-chucking around the house. Common enough further south, both were the first I'd seen this far north. Our fourth year here started in February, and the list for 2010 continues to grow. Let me know if you've any questions about the birds or the rest of the fantastic wildlife here: email me from the contacts page.
