Church Life
There is a weekly service at the church in Lochaline, and the local primary school children attend a special service at the end of each term led by the Head Teacher.
Church Buildings
The present church at Lochaline, known locally as Kiel Church, was built in 1898, although there has been a place of worship on the site since Columba built the first one in the sixth century. The nearby churchyard contains the ruins of the medieval church, which is surrounded by many interesting and unusual gravestones. The Old Session House next to the church contains a very fine selection of carved stones.
Church Activities
The Kirk Session has worked tirelessly to put in place opportunities for additional worship and Christian celebrations to appeal to a wide section of the community. The Guild is responsible for much of the fund-raising for the church, helped by members of the community.
The story goes that as Columba was returning to Iona from the mainland, he and his companions came over the brow of the hill above Loch Aline. Looking down on the raised green level where the church now is, he turned to his friends and said, “On that spot I wish a church to be built”.
And so it was: Cille Choluimchille, the church of Columba of the Church.
